Sherwood has been a staple of high quality audio/video components for decades, and the Newcastle line represents the pinnacle of the company's engineering prowess. The R-972, which retails for $1,799, falls on the higher-end of mainstream receiver pricing. That said, it's also groundbreaking in terms of its feature set and performance, so if you think it's out of your budget I advise you to keep reading. The Sherwood S-700 is another receiver that even our fathers will testify about their greatness. It’s a Chicago-based company that is popular for the production of high-class stereo receivers.
On the digital side, Anthem uses a quad-core processor to extract every nuance of object-based surround information, then the signal is decoded through premium 32-bit / 768 kHz Differential-Output D/A converters. This is far better than found in most receivers and the result is sound that totally envelopes you. Audyssey MultEQ XT is a very good room EQ and setup system that is included. Audyssey is also one of the easiest-to-use room correction systems on the market, just connect up the mic, and off it goes.

The Onkyo TX-NR6100 offers plenty in the way of connections. You get three inputs with the latest HDMI 2.1 standard, letting you take advantage of 4K/120Hz and 8K TVs. Gaming visuals should improve, too, with VRR and ALLM support.
The fact with the Cinema 50 you can calibrate them each separately is just super cool. Plus, Yamaha’s lineup of MusicCast speakers can help you keep the home theater sound with significantly less wiring. A pair of MusicCast 50 or MusicCast 20 wireless streaming speakers can be paired with the RX-V6A to act as the system’s surround channels, eliminating the need to run wiring all the way to the back of your room. If wiring is no issue, you can move those MusicCast speakers throughout your home to enjoy whole-home audio at its finest. Beyond that, the Arcam AVR30 still offers several of the creature comforts found in other AV receivers on this list.

Free 3D design tool so you can visualize how the screen and speakers should be placed for optimum performance in your room. The best-sounding receiver we have heard to date, and it has some outstanding tech to help you get the best sound for those of you with more than one subwoofer. Of course, Airplay2 and Chromecast are built in as well, and Arcam’s MusicLife app works great for most of the streaming services. Anthem also has almost everything covered on the video side with Dolby Vision, HDR, IMAX Enhanced, and the 2023 model supports 8K video. Music streaming is also very seamless with Airplay2, Chromecast, and Bluetooth.
It was incredibly simple to use and quite small—roughly the size of a pack of cigarettes. When it was introduced, Phillips intended it strictly as a low-fi medium, for dictation and other non-critical uses. Wide-range frequency response and impressive signal-to-noise ratio were not design considerations. Turntables like the Dual 1215 and 1218 and the really good, rugged Pioneer belt-drive manuals fitted with good-sounding cartridges from brands like Shure, Audio-Technica and Stanton made record playing simple, accurate and reliable. Technics introduced the revolutionary SL-1200 in late 1972, the industry’s first direct-drive turntable.

In devices such as these, power differences of 10 or 20 watts are not significant. It takes twice as much power to get only 3 dB more volume, which is a just-noticeable difference—the equivalent of turning up a volume knob just slightly. Thus, a 100-watt-per-channel receiver barely plays louder than a 50-watt-per-channel receiver. Six HDMI inputs, including a front-panel HDMI input, make it easy to run all of your devices through the AVR-S750H.

Everything sounded great, most notably during some of the Olympic programming and on our Blu-ray movies. Each piece we used to test sound seemed to ooze with crisp, impressive detail. Sherwood might not be the first name you think of when considering a new receiver.
The whole process only took about 15 minutes, so I just sat back and let the Sherwood do its thing while trying to keep my wife out of the room - these tests require silence. I think that its important to point out that every home theater will produce different results, so simple trial and error should be your best bet when working with different room EQ modes. In terms of video capabilities, the Marantz NR1711 is built for the latest features. It has just a single HDMI output, but it's capable of 8K/60Hz or 4K/120Hz video signals, and there's a corresponding HDMI input for pass-through. The other HDMI ports may not accept an 8K input, but the Marantz receiver can upscale video from those ports to 8K.
The amazing thing was how similar the 7 sounded to the 3a, except for the deepest bass and extreme highs. My speakers were AR-2ax’s (10-in 3-ways), the ones sitting vertically directly on the bench. Lying horizontally on top of them are my cousin’s AR-3a’s (12-in 3-ways), which he had loaned me for a few weeks. Sitting on top of the 3a’s are my sister’s AR-7’s (8-in 2-ways), which had just arrived by mail order and I hadn’t yet brought them over to her house to set them up. There were record stores everywhere and in areas with strong concentrations of college-aged kids—like Boston, NY, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.—it seemed like there was a stereo store on every street corner. Tech Hi-Fi, Tweeter Etc, Audio Labs, DeMambro Electronics, Atlantic Sound—these were just some of the store names that I can recall.
Generally, this is a receiver that I can recommend because its features are elegant for maximum performance. The sound quality is the best thing that will have your attention in this Vintage Sherwood receiver. With movie studios beginning to adopt the “straight-to-streaming” model for several major motion pictures, there’s never been a better time to transform your home setup into your own personal home theater.
